To pick up where we left off, Kanye is by now an established producer having received various accolades for his work producing Jay-Z’s Blueprint. His dream of becoming a rapper has never left him, although no one at Roc-a-Fella records (or any other label for that matter) is taking him seriously. Producers aren’t known to be good rappers.
Kanye had been writing and saving samples and beats in case his big break would come one day. It was said he’d get his own rap album, although excuses and delays kept getting in the way. Then, after a long day of producing, late into the night he took his car, fell asleep at the wheel and broke his jaw in a serious car accident. He wrote his first hit “Through the Wire” just two weeks after the accident, while still in the hospital… and even recorded it with his jaw still wired shut (and apparently while heavily medicated). His debut album kept being delayed as he continued producing for big names like Talib Kweli, Ludacris, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. But in 2004, his time came, and his debut album College Dropout was finally released to critical acclaim, earning the Grammy for Best Rap Album that year.
That accident seemed to be a turning point for Kanye, and that was only the beginning…
